A few snippets of the everyday life of a 'paluumuttaja' (prodigal daughter) living in Jyväskylä, Finland, as a student learning more about language policy and planning for sign languages.

Eija and I rode our bikes to the local church building (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). It was built by the congregants back in the 1950s, I believe. There are roughly 250 members in Jyväskylä and about 125-140 who attend weekly services. They have translators available for those who do not speak Finnish. Everyone's been so welcoming. I feel right at home.

That's so cool, Sarah. I want to see a picture of this Eija person that you are hanging out with? And how far away is the church? That's nice about the translators (especially when I come to visit you), but I'm sure that you will pick the language up really quickly.
